Semifictionalized autobiography about the first year of Harvard Law School in 1975-76. It's pretty clear that Turow recognized the dehumanization - cultural replacement cycle that characterizes cults, but doesn't apply that label, and may not have made the association. The actual events seem to be in line with most tales of high-stress indoctrination systems, including isolation from normal cultural context, sleep deprivation, language redefinition, long hours of immersive study, abusive authority figures, arbitrary reward/punishment... pretty much everything the Marines or the Scientologists do, but with less physical component and less organization.
