Major mistake: applying for a new job via email from your current work email address.
I'm assuming Staples doesn't encourage their IT staff to apply for jobs with other companies on Staples' time, at least. Why the heck wouldn't you get a GoogleMail or Hotmail or j. random ISP mail account and send your resume from there? Because you want to be fired?

Oy.

As an additional idiocy, sending a message consisting only of "What is the hourly rate?" when the advert asks for a cover letter and resume and states that compensation is negotiable...

Double check your cover letter - make sure the job it claims your applying for is the right one, not the one you applied to *last*.

I did a phone interview today with a dude who like totally spent way more time telling me about his cool scuba and snowboarding trips than his IT skills or interest in the job but he sure did want to know what the gig paid and what benefits he would be getting. Short answer is none because he is like so not working for me.

Strangely enough I did once interview someone who talked about his scuba equipment...

Although in his case it was actually a computer controlled rebreather used for cave diving. He was the main programmer for the computer controls, and he felt that spending twelve hours underwater on his own code was a good indication that he had a flair for life critical code.

We both regretfully decided that he was overqualified and too expensive for the job I had open. He would have been fun to work with.

Sounds to me like someone is applying for a job he's not qualified for. (We already know he's not suited to it.) Did some clerk at Staples decide to just apply for everything he could find, or something? The email-address mistake I can attribute to being young and clueless (don't know if that's the case here), but ignoring instructions and asking about money show major clue deficiencies...
