(the what I read at WorldCon edition)
_Uglies_
_Pretties_
_Specials_
_Extras_, all by Scott Westerfeld.
I like Westerfeld's adult novels more than his YA, but the YA seems to be selling better, so there you go. This is a trilogy-plus set in a post-apocalyptic (nanotech plague made all the gasoline explosive) rigidly controlled nameless ecologically sound utopian city. The viewpoint character is just about to turn 16, the appointed date on which she will stop being an Ugly (unadulterated human) courtesy of The Operation that will make her Pretty -- granting her beauty, health, wealth, status, and incidentally turn off the sections of her brain that are creative, inventive, non-conformist, or worried.
Naturally she escapes to a rebellion hidden in the wilderness. It's what happens after that which shows off Westerfeld's talent.
Good story-making, interesting themes, not at all preachy.
