_Lord Darcy_, Randall Garrett (and touched by Eric Flint and Guy Gordon to some unknown degree)
The one thing separating these fantasy mysteries (an alternate world where Richard the Lion-Hearted came back, re-established the English Monarchy properly, had a son named Arthur, hoorah hoorah and magic was codified about the time that Newton would have been doing his thing... eh, it's an excuse for creative anachronisms and an Empire of Europe and the Americas that loves the king-emperor, yes they do) ... as I was saying. The one thing separating these fantasy mysteries from satisfying modern fantasy mysteries is that some of them aren't quite fair to the reader. Not all the clues are necessarily given before Lord Darcy announces the murderer; he needs to explain a little too much. But Darcy's chief forensic sorceror, Master Sean O Lochlainn, is a charming and able assistant, much more effective than John Watson ever was.
Overall: amusing and engaging, but don't think too hard about what the economic underpinnings must look like.
