_Steel_, Carrie Vaughn
YArr! Pirates! And fencing! And a plucky female teen protagonist who takes a magical trip in time to join a bloody pirate's crew!
To her credit, Ms. Vaughn points out some of the more fantastical elements in a afterword. Not the time-travel and the black magic and the thaumaturgy; no, the drastic changes in behavior necessary to make the nastiness palatable and survivable.
This may appeal more to those who are more interested in fencing, fantasy pirates, or sanitized versions of 17th C shipboard life... I didn't think it was up to her usual quality.
