_Against All Odds_, Thomas DePrima

The hero must have a worthy opponent, or there is no tension.

Grade-school English teachers like to divide up the categories of tension: man vs man, man vs nature, man vs technology, man vs destiny, man vs herself. (See what trouble grammatical defaults cause!). This book features none of those in any plausible sense. Our Heroine continues to be supported by the hand of the author. She can do no wrong, or at least, has not done anything wrong in seven volumes to date.

I think the only plausible way to read this is as the prologue for an actual story which we will probably never see. This is the tale of Jennetta Carver, Evil Empress of the Galaxy, crushing all who stand in her path (weak fools!) until a hero emerges to put a stop to it all. Or a rebellion, that would be nice. Or an assassin. I would root for the assassin, definitely.
