_Pushing Ice_, Alastair Reynolds
_100 bullets: first shot, last call_, Brian Azzarello

I didn't especially like Reynolds first books, but _Pushing Ice_ is a real winner. Relatively hard SF reminiscent of _Tau Zero_, _Learning the World_, and _Heart of the Comet_.

I picked up the first volume of 100 Bullets based on jducoeur's recommendation; this is a weird case where I don't like the individual stories much but I'm interested in seeing where it's all going. Briefly, it's noir crime anthology with a repeating setup: a man comes up to the current protagonist and offers a briefcase containing a gun and one hundred bullets; there is something linked to this that prevents arrest and prosecution, no matter what you do with them.

I will warn you that, while the story is kind of fascinatingly intricate, odds are you aren't going to like the rest of the individual stories any more than you do the first ones. The *plot* changes dramatically after the first volume or so (the briefcase MacGuffin stops being terribly important as we get more into What's Going On), but the *style* is pretty consistent throughout...
