183. Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir

Eight magicians and their bodyguards go into seclusion in an island-castle at the request of the Emperor, there to learn how to ascend into sainthood. Most of them have reasons to kill one or more of the others. Most of them act on those reasons.

Compelling reading but at the end (and through most of the middle) I wanted the whole bloody empire destroyed. Sure, they claim that there's something worse out there -- could be propaganda.

Spoiler: I'm 80% of the way through "Harrow the Ninth" (the second in the trilogy) and, yup, there's something worse out there, and we get to see it. (Also, there is a plucky resistance against the emperor ... or is it? Comprehension not assisted by Harrow being absolutely bugfuck crazy, for "performed brain surgery on herself while hallucinating" levels of crazy, and we're alternating between seeing things through her eyes and seeing things through Gideon's eyes in tight second-person POV.)
