Three pounds minus of sweet cherries, heading downhill. Met them with sugar, lime zest, lime juice, and some lemon juice. Exposed to heat for a while, then bottled the resulting fruit-in-syrup. I wonder if it would go well over some clean snow?

My grandmother had a recipe that involved fermenting cherries. There was some vodka involved at the end as well. Unfortunately she didn't pass it on to anyone...

Your grandmother must have known my grandmother, except that my family's recipe involves brandy instead of vodka. When I was sick as a small child, my mother would slip me a couple of cherries from the bottle as a special treat.
It is very simple.

Wash some morello cherries - those are the best ones for this purpose.
There is no need to pit them unless you have time on your hands.
Put the cherries in a clean bottle and then fill it with brandy. Cork.
Let it sit in a cool place for at least 3 to 6 months. That is the hard part!
Drink. That is the easy part.
The cherries are delicious served with vanilla icecream.
