A word of advice for recent graduates (and, indeed, anyone seeking employment in a technical field):

I think such people fall into the same categories as the "1-percenters". Y'know, the ones who ask every woman they meet "will you sleep with me?" because "there's that 1% out there who say yes..."

A young man I was briefly courting earlier this year claims he used to go to nightclubs and simply walk around asking women that question, and get a 25% yes rate (with a 50% no rate and a 25% slap rate). I think he actually believed this story would impress me.

As the current mob in Washington demonstrates, incompetence is no bar to employment. Given this example, why shouldn't regular folks take a chance as well?

I once hired a totally incompetent programmer. After I gave up on his ability to write code I assigned him the job of writing up the user manual. He couldn't do that either.

The saddest cases I saw were guys who had been laid off by Grumman and were experts in some arcane languages used only by the military. They had no experience with everything else that had been going on for prior 20 years. The moral is, keep up your skills...
