A word of advice for recent graduates (and, indeed, anyone seeking employment in a technical field):

if you do not understand what the job is, do not bother applying for it.

As the current mob in Washington demonstrates, incompetence is no bar to employment. Given this example, why shouldn't regular folks take a chance as well?

I once hired a totally incompetent programmer. After I gave up on his ability to write code I assigned him the job of writing up the user manual. He couldn't do that either.

The saddest cases I saw were guys who had been laid off by Grumman and were experts in some arcane languages used only by the military. They had no experience with everything else that had been going on for prior 20 years. The moral is, keep up your skills...
