SCA membership

My membership in the SCA expires this summer. I'm thinking about not renewing it.

The cons: I would not be allowed to be an officer, including running events. Each event I attended would be $3 more expensive.

The pros: I would make SCA, Inc., a tiny bit unhappy.

Losing my Golden Gryphon would certainly be a disappointment. Although I understand the pros of making the corporation unhappy -- maybe you can send a strongly worded note :)

I dropped out of the SCA decades ago.

GGP is still probably the best job I had in the SCA. I recommend it, still. :-)

But there are hacks around that, if necessary.

It seems the SCA is starting to lose money, structurally, and might be questioning the membership model, at least a little. I am unsure if dropping your membership now, is good or bad - I guess it depends on whether they stampede, and in which direction.

Overall, an active-in-the-SCA non-member gives the SCA more money than a member. With less responsiveness to the source of that money.

I'm not sure that the BoD/Corporation could be any less responsive than they are now.

But I suspect that you are right, and that I would end up giving them more money. That's all that matters really -- not that I spend the money, but that it goes to them.

I would also like to point out that we have a family membership. I do not wish to lose my ability to autocrat events or hold office. I think it would also make us less likely to go to events, which would effectively reduce us to nil.

How many events that charge the tax do you attend in a year? If you dropped your membership, would the tax cause you to attend fewer of them? If so, would that be good or bad for you?

erm, can't help it, gotta ask:

am not following why you think the corp. would notice or care? you matter to us, but not to them. not in the least.

conversely, the corp. is utterly irrelevent to the participants, as far as I am concerned. The macrocosm is made up of things I cannot change and is mostly nto worth my energy to notice. The microcosm is made up of my "village" where I CAN effect change and is very much worth my effort.

Just a specific note: while the Corp doesn't care in the individual, it does in the aggregate. The SCA, Inc is losing money -- at the moment, a *lot* of money. They're not panicking yet (a nice change of pace), but it would be accurate to say that they are Deeply Concerned, especially about the fact that membership numbers are steadily dropping. They're casting about for solutions at the moment.

My only real comment to DSR, therefore, is that *if* he were to decide not to re-up, it should be accompanied by a polite note to the Board about why. At the moment, it's way too easy for them to speculate arbitrarily about the cause of the trend -- some actual information, even if anecdotal, would provide a little more reality...
