_Midnight Riot_ or _Rivers of London_, Ben Aaronovitch.
In the UK edition, this book is called _Rivers of London_. That's a better title.
It's an urban fantasy, because London is a city, and there is magic. Not very much magic, or at least, not very much powerful magic. Our protagonist is a junior member of the Metropolitan Police. He's finished his initial two-year term as a uniformed street constable, and hoping for an interesting assignment. Fortunately for the plot, he stumbles into a supernatural murder, a ghost, and the sole surviving member of the Met's magical crimes group. Things then proceed to get hairy.
This is not Aaronovitch's debut novel, contrary to what some Amazon reviews claim. It's his sixth novel; one through five were all set in the Doctor Who universe. One of those was the brilliant _The Also People_, which filed off serial numbers from Iain Banks' Culture settings and dropped in the Doctor.
A sequel to this book has already been written and is scheduled for publication in March -- _Moon Over Soho_.
