I do the same.

But one of the tricks of the "why" conversations is not information exchange. At that age they are learning the art of conversation, and they love the attention and conversation, and "why" prolongs the game.

Teach not just facts. Ask them "what do you think" and draw out the conversation another way.

though often, after answering a question a few times, my daughter will look at me and say "oh, ok then" and then go off to play.

I do the answer to "why" for a short while and then ask them why they want to know. Recently this has worked so that I never get "why" anymore.... :-D
