Tonight I read the first chapter of Steven Gould's _Wildside_ to the boys, after rejecting _Jumper_ as having motivations and relationships they weren't going to be able to understand yet.

It seems to have gone over well. Z is hypothesizing himself to sleep over the passenger pigeons.

Chalk that partly up to your excellent parenting so far, that the motivations of an abusive father would basically not occur to them as having any basis in reality...

I am surprised at Wildside, though--it was a bit scary for me when I read it at age...urm...26? Perhaps being pinned by hyena is scarier when you can really visualize it happening.
