_Heat Stroke_ and _Chill Factor_, Rachel Caine
_Danse Macabre_, Laurell Hamilton (incomplete)

Ms. Caine does a tightly-plotted, well-characterized set of novels. They may be moderately accessible without the first book, but definitely not as much fun. Read in publication order. The titles are weather-related, but not indicative of the contents.

I have not yet finished the new Hamilton. I may not. I am now 144 pages into a 480 page novel, and the total timespan covered has been less than one evening... during which about five, maybe fifteen pages of plot in any other novel has elapsed. I shall henceforth place The Shark Jumping Incident after _Obsidian Butterfly_, in which sex started moving from a plot element to an obsession.

I read an Anita short story recently where she took a job but failed to complete it because she got distracted by Studly the Vampire Dude.

Cohen's BLOOD ON THE MOON (sequel to Baen and Cohen's THE TAKING OF SATCON STATION) has a lead detective who gets distracted by something part way through the book, leaving the actual resolution of the murder case to a colleague.

I think I have mentioned this online before but I did read a mystery with an A plot and an obvious red herring B plot in which the author got confused and had the detective solve the wrong crime. Luckily, for no obvious reason, the bad guy in the B plot blurts out a spontaneous confession to the crime the detective was supposed to solve so it all worked out ok.
